Impeachment complaint filed against Duterte in Congress

Updates to follow: Magdalo Partylist Representative Gary C. Alejano filed an impeachment complaint against Pres. Rodrigo Duterte in Congress today for the president’s alleged “state policy of killing of drug offenders.”

In a press conference Alejano said the complaint stems from the 1,400 alleged killings by Davao Death Squad when Duterte was still mayor in Davao City. He claims that the deaths have balloon to more than 8,000 deaths which are all connected to the drug war waged by the president.

“Huwag nating hintayin na mas marami pa ang mamatay. Kahit sino ka man dapat managot ang gumawa ng krimen (Let us not wait for the death toll to increase. Whoever you are, if you committed a crime, you should be held accountable),” Alejano said.

The drug killings were results of the Philippine National Police’s Operation Tokhang, which was temporarily stopped because of the human rights violation complaints.

The PNP is set resume with Operation Tokhang, but has avowed to make it less bloody.

Alejano also included as a basis for his complaint the alleged unexplained wealth of Duterte. He claims Duterte has P2.2 billion in unexplained wealth that is undeclared in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN).

Duterte for his part has said in the past that there is no truth to the allegation of unexplained wealth. He has challenged his critics to show proof of his hidden wealth, but concrete evidence is yet to be seen.

Included in the corruption complaint also is the alleged hiring of 11,000 ghost employees in Davao City when he was still mayor.

This issue arose during the campaign period and the alleged ghost employees trooped to the Davao City Hall to show that they are real people that are assigned by the city government to the hinterland areas.

“Kami po ay naniniwala na si Pangulong Duterte ay hindi nararapat na manungkulan bilang pinakamataas na opisyal ng bansa,” he said.

Alejano clarifies that he and his colleagues are not plotting for the destabilization of the Duterte government.

“We are not here for a destabilization plot, just want to give filipinos an alternate view on what’s happening on the government,” he said.
