Davao City, January 21, 2017 — The Department of Agriculture’s Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) in partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of Norala, South Cotabato recently completed the 1.7- kilometer road concreting project in Barangay Poblacion that links farms to the market.
The P18.9-M farm to market road project from Purok Taurus to Cental Balabago, which will benefit 500 farmers, covers a service area of 900 hectares.
This project, under the infrastructure development component of DA-PRDP, aims to build strategic network of rural logistics infrastructure within priority value chains in targeted program areas.
The project will ensure that farmers will be able to bring their product to the market at less cost.
Before the project’s completion, the farmers can only haul their produce by carabao.
“In the past only our carabaos and the karosa (cart) can pass through the area because of the road’s terrible condition,” Cesar Suoberon, a farmer said.
Haulers used to refuse from picking the farmers’ produce in the area because the road was almost impassable.
“Now, we are happy that we will no longer use the karosa because truckers will pick them up directly at our farms,” Suoberon said.
The farmers also had to pay more for transportation before the road’s completion as no hauling trucks would enter their area. Now, they don’t have to pay for hauling fee.
“We used to pay P15 pesos per sack for the hauling for before, but now we won’t have to,” Alex Parreño, a 67-year old farmer said. (DLS)
